Flemish Nobleman: Charles de Lannoy
Charles de Lannoy was a noble from Flanders who served the Habsburgs with distinction after Burgundy became part of their domain. He is best known as the commander of the imperial armies during the Four Years' War in Italy.
Early Life and Service
Born into the feudal family of de Lannoy, Charles was the lord of the town of Lannoy in modern-day France. His bravery earned him the favor of Emperor Maximilian. During Charles V's youth, Lannoy was part of the council of nobles governing the Burgundian Netherlands.
Prestigious Honors
Lannoy received the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece in 1516. He served as governor of Tournai in 1521 and viceroy of Naples in 1522 and 1523. In recognition of his valor, Lannoy was made an imperial count and granted the principality of Sulmona in Abruzzo.
Italian Territories and Legacy
Lannoy expanded his lands in Italy to include the city of Asti in Lombardy. His wife, Françoise de Montbel, held the title of Duchess of Boiano.
Final Years and Succession
Lannoy's untimely death in 1527 left his holdings and titles to his sons, who went on to secure their place among the elite of Italian nobility. The last prince of Sulmona, Filippo Orazio de Lannoy, died tragically in 1604 after his bed collapsed.
