Colby Sanders: The Woman Who Gave Away Her Wedding

A Heartfelt Sacrifice

Colby Sanders, a 24-year-old from Tyler, Texas, made an extraordinary decision: she cancelled her own wedding and donated the entire day to a couple she had never met. Her selfless act brought joy to Halie Hipsher and her fiancé, Matt Jones, who were able to exchange vows on October 20, the very same day that Colby was supposed to have walked down the aisle.

A Gesture of Generosity

After calling off her engagement, Colby faced a dilemma. The wedding vendors refused to refund her money, but they offered to reschedule the ceremony for a different occasion. However, Colby had a different idea.

"I thought, 'What else am I going to do with this but give it to somebody?'" she recalled.

The "Give-A-Wedding" Contest

Colby created a Facebook post announcing her intention to "give away" her wedding to another deserving bride. She asked people to share their stories, and she received hundreds of heartwarming responses. From the numerous submissions, she selected 45 names that particularly touched her.

Halie's Touching Story

Among the shortlisted brides was Halie Hipsher, who shared her story about her grandfather, Edwin Truett Hipsher, who was battling stage four pancreatic cancer. She was concerned that he might not live long enough to walk her down the aisle. Halie and Matt had originally planned to get married in fall 2019 due to financial constraints.

The Random Selection

A few weeks before the wedding date, Colby wrote the potential winners' names on slips of paper and placed them in a bowl. She randomly drew a name, and Halie emerged as the "lucky bride."

A Dream Come True

Shortly after, Samantha Morrison, the owner of Morrison Light Photography, offered to provide the couple with free wedding photography. Other vendors also stepped forward to lend their services gratis.

"Once the contest came around, I couldn't shake this feeling I was going to get it," Halie recalled. "But I didn't want to get my hopes up, so I waited until the results were announced."

She added, "It was stressful yet surreal to plan everything on such short notice. But walking down that aisle was the most amazing feeling, and I wouldn't change a single second of the day because it was everything I could have ever dreamed of and more."

Inspiration and Gratitude

Colby Sanders hopes that her story will inspire others to acts of kindness.

"It was just something that I felt led to do," she said. "It was an easy decision for me to make. And I'm so happy for who won it. Halie's reaction made it all worth it."

Colby attended Halie and Matt's wedding and posed for wedding photos with them, proving that even in the face of adversity, love and compassion can prevail.
