In 1919, he attended Harrow School for Boys, where he became friends with Evelyn Waugh, Francis Rose, and most importantly, Cecil Beaton, with whom he developed a lifelong friendship. He was expelled from school for his scandalous sexual escapades. In 1926, at the age of 19, Charles opened his first hat shop in Chicago using his school friend's name, Charles Boucherdon. Two years later, he left Chicago with 70 cents in his pocket, a "Pierce Arrow" car, and a few hats, and headed to Long Island.

Later, he opened a millinery shop above a garage in Murray Hill, New York, and began his foray into clothing design. Charles James showcased one of his most successful collections in Paris in 1947. In the 1950s, he spent most of his time in New York. The designer always viewed his dresses as works of art, and the same went for most of his clients. Year after year, Charles would rework and refine his creations, disregarding societal trends of the season. The details of his meticulously crafted garments were interchangeable, allowing Charles to continually explore new ideas and combine design solutions on paper and in practice.

Charles James gained the most recognition for his "sculptural dresses," bandage dresses made from luxurious fabrics crafted according to strict tailoring standards. However, the designer also excelled in creating unique capes and coats often embellished with fur and embroidery, spiral-zip dresses, and white satin quilts. After the birth of his son, Charles James Jr., in 1965, James also launched a children's clothing collection.

He was responsible for the interior design and several furniture pieces for the Houston home of American businessman John de Menil and his wife, Franco-American collector and patron Dominique de Menil. After renowned designer Arnold Scaasi returned from Paris to New York, he worked with James for two years.

Charles James retired in 1958 and passed away on September 23, 1978, from bronchial pneumonia at the Chelsea Hotel in New York.
