Career as a French Diplomat

Imperial Ambassador

Édouard Antoine Thouvenelserved as a French diplomat during the Second Empire. From 1851 to 1853 and 1860 to 1861, he held the post of ambassador to the Ottoman Porte. In 1861, he was appointed ambassador to the Papal States, where he remained until 1863.

Minister of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs

In 1865, Thouvenel became Minister of Internal Affairs. Two years later, in 1867, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. During his tenure, he played a key role in shaping France's diplomatic relations.

Advocate for Peace

Preventing War with Prussia

Thouvenel was a staunch advocate for peace. He strongly opposed a military confrontation between France and Prussia. Throughout his time in government, he worked tirelessly to avoid a diplomatic rupture with the Prussian kingdom.

Embassy in London

In 1869, Thouvenel was appointed ambassador to London, where he sought to mend relations between France and Great Britain. He served in this role until the fall of the Second Empire in 1870, when he retired from diplomatic service.
