Career as a French Diplomat
Imperial AmbassadorÉdouard Antoine Thouvenelserved as a French diplomat during the Second Empire. From 1851 to 1853 and 1860 to 1861, he held the post of ambassador to the Ottoman Porte. In 1861, he was appointed ambassador to the Papal States, where he remained until 1863.
Minister of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs
In 1865, Thouvenel became Minister of Internal Affairs. Two years later, in 1867, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. During his tenure, he played a key role in shaping France's diplomatic relations.
Advocate for Peace
Preventing War with PrussiaThouvenel was a staunch advocate for peace. He strongly opposed a military confrontation between France and Prussia. Throughout his time in government, he worked tirelessly to avoid a diplomatic rupture with the Prussian kingdom.
