Early Life and Education
Jean-Jacques Leandre was born on July 16, 1857, in Lunéville, France, to an army officer father. He moved to Paris in 1878 to train under Émile Benon and later enrolled at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Cabanel.
Teaching and Recognition
From 1882 to 1897, Leandre taught drawing in various Parisian institutions. His artistic career took a significant turn in 1889 when he received a bronze medal at the Paris World Fair for his painting, "Mother (Sleeping, but My Heart Stays Awake)."
World's Fair Success
At the 1900 World Fair, Leandre's lithographs earned him a prestigious gold medal. His reputation extended beyond portraiture to caricature and satire. In 1904, he founded the Society of Humorist Artists.
Illustrious Career
Leandre's caricatures appeared in prominent French newspapers such as "Le Figaro" and satirical magazines like "Le Rire." While some of his works were celebrated for their wit, others stirred controversy. He also gained renown as an illustrator, particularly for his illustrations of Gustave Flaubert's "Madame Bovary."
