After his military service, he enrolled at Western Kentucky State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Physical Education and Fine Arts in 1961. He briefly worked as an assistant basketball coach at his former high school before embarking on his acting career.

The actor's television debut came in 1967 when he appeared in an episode of the iconic series "Mission: Impossible." His captivating performance paved the way for a significant role as Adam in the acclaimed "Star Trek" episode "The Way to Eden."
