Charles Nelson Goodyear: The American Inventor Who Revolutionized Rubber
Charles Nelson Goodyear, the eldest of six children of Amasa Goodyear, was born on December 29, 1800, in New Haven, Connecticut. At the age of 14, Charles left home and headed to Philadelphia in 1814 to become a master craftsman in the hardware industry. After dedicating much of his time to work, Charles returned to Connecticut when he turned 21 and joined his family's business. Alongside his father, Charles began manufacturing agricultural tools.
On August 3, 1824, Goodyear married Clarissa Beecher. Two years later, they relocated to Philadelphia and opened a hardware store. Initially, American consumers preferred English imports over domestically-made products, leading to initial struggles for Goodyear's business. However, over time, their tools gained popularity and began to sell well. Unfortunately, their success was short-lived. Between 1829 and 1830, Charles fell seriously ill with dyspepsia, a digestive disorder. Around the same time, several trading houses went bankrupt. Despite his attempts to recover, Goodyear ultimately faced financial ruin.
During this period of failure, Charles became aware of a new material called rubber and tried to gather as much information as possible from newspapers. He also became interested in the products of the Boston-based company, Roxbury Rubber Company, which was experimenting with rubber. Upon arriving in New York, Goodyear noticed individual life-saving devices with poorly designed inflation tubes. He returned to Philadelphia, created several efficient and reliable tubes, and brought them to New York to show the manager of Roxbury Rubber Company.
The company manager was pleased, and from that moment, Charles began his experiments with rubber, confident that he could overcome all the problems associated with rubber production. Upon his return home, Goodyear found himself behind bars due to creditors' lawsuits. However, even in prison, he continued his work with inexpensive Indian rubber. Although his new compound with magnesium lacked sufficient plasticity, Goodyear did not give up his experiments. He sold all his furniture, sent his family to a boarding house, and worked in New York with a friend who was an apothecary. At some point, he decided to heat a mixture of rubber and magnesium in a solution of unslaked lime. While the stickiness of the rubber was eliminated, perfection was still far from being achieved. He noticed that nitric acid made rubber as soft and dry as fabric, and vulcanization in an acidic environment opened up a range of valuable products.
While working with chemicals in the laboratory, Charles severely compromised his health. On one occasion, he inhaled gases and narrowly escaped death. Despite his health issues, Goodyear remained committed to his life's work. He discovered that heating natural rubber with sulfur resulted in vulcanized rubber. He clarified that the discovery was not a mere accident but a result of active experimentation and observation. Goodyear opened a small factory in Springfield, Massachusetts, and in 1844, his rubber vulcanization process was patented. The process involved the dimerization of propylene in the initial stage, followed by pyrolysis.
On July 1, 1860, Charles passed away when he went to visit his dying daughter. Unfortunately, he did not live to see her alive, and as a result, he fell ill and soon passed away. In 1898, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company was founded in honor of the inventor.
