Charles Clermont-Ganneau was a French orientalist who served in the French Jerusalem mission and in Constantinople.

Archaeological Discoveries in Palestine

During his scientific research in Palestine, Clermont discovered several stelae with ancient Semitic inscriptions. Among these was a stone with an inscription prohibiting entry into a sanctuary under the penalty of death, believed to belong to Solomon's Temple.
