Early Life and Education

Charles Simonyi was born on September 10, 1948, in Budapest, Hungary. He left Hungary for Denmark in 1966 and then immigrated to the United States two years later. A brilliant student, Simonyi developed a passion for computers and programming in high school.

Academic Achievements

Simonyi received a bachelor's degree in mathematics and engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972. He went on to earn a doctorate from Stanford University several years later.

Xerox PARC and Microsoft

From 1972 to 1980, Simonyi worked at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), where he contributed to the development of the Bravo WYSIWYG text editor. In 1981, he joined Microsoft, where he played a significant role in the creation of Word, Excel, Multiplan, and other software programs. Simonyi held various leadership positions during his tenure at the company.

Intentional Software Corporation

In the summer of 2002, Simonyi founded his own software company, Intentional Software Corporation.

Space Tourism

In 2007, Simonyi became the fifth space tourist. He signed a contract with Russia to fly on one of their spacecraft on April 1, 2006. The training process commenced later that year, where Simonyi underwent medical examinations and preparatory drills. The spacecraft carrying Simonyi launched in April 2007, and the mission lasted for approximately two weeks.

Business and Philanthropy

Currently, Charles Simonyi is not only the head of a major company but also actively involved in various civic roles, serving on the boards of trustees for several organizations. In 2006, he was awarded the Order of Merit, and after his spaceflight in 2007, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Republic.
