Early Life and Education
French organist Alexandre-Charles-Henri Verwoert was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer. He received his early music education from Joseph Massart, organist in his hometown, before continuing his studies in Saint-Omer with Auguste Catuyau. Verwoert also studied composition under Théodore Labarre.
Early Career
Until 1846, Verwoert served as organist at the Saint-Joseph Church in Boulogne-sur-Mer, mentoring notable pupils such as Charles Louis Hanon. He later held the organist position at the Saint-Evoi Church in Rouen.
Appointment at Saint-Roch
In 1859, after a competitive selection among 65 applicants, Verwoert secured the position of titular organist at the Saint-Roch Church in Paris. He held this prestigious post until 1873.
Organist at Notre-Dame Cathedral
Following his departure from Saint-Roch, Verwoert became organist at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. He held this position for the remainder of his career.
Academia and Advocacy
In addition to his organist duties, Verwoert played a key role in the Académie Académique de Musique Sacrée, a society founded in 1861. This club, which included aristocrats, clergy, and musicians (with Camille Saint-Saëns serving as organist), focused on studying and occasionally performing ancient sacred music, particularly works by Palestrina. After the society dissolved, Verwoert continued to champion the music of Palestrina and Orlando di Lasso through the Philharmonic Choir of Rouen.
