Early Life and Education

Charlie Brooker was born in Reading, Berkshire, and grew up in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Oxfordshire. He attended school in Wallingford. In the late 1980s, Brooker began his professional career as a writer and artist for the comic series 'Oink!'. From 1989 to 1992, he attended the Polytechnic of Central London (now known as the University of Westminster), where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Media Culture, specializing in television and video production. However, he was unable to complete his studies due to difficulties with his dissertation. His final project at the university was a short film called 'A Busy Day for Bob Bumstain', starring Jay Simpson and stand-up comedian Ian Moore.

Career

In the mid-1990s, Charlie Brooker worked for the magazine 'PC Zone'. In February 1998, one of his comics caused controversy as it depicted a zoo where children could vent their anger on animals in various cruel ways. Brooker's work was initially available on his website, but soon attracted sponsors and began to be published in print. From 1999 to 2003, he ran another website called 'TvGoHome', where he regularly published parodies of television programs. In 2000, Brooker started writing a column for 'The Guardian' magazine, where he reviewed television broadcasts. By the end of October 2006, the column expanded into a full page that included content from Brooker's websites, TvGoHome and the parody Internet encyclopedia, Ignopedia.

Controversies and Television Work

On October 24, 2004, Charlie Brooker wrote a column about the upcoming presidential election and George Bush, where he made a controversial statement about famous American presidential assassins. The magazine's management removed the article from the website and replaced it with an apology from Brooker. Brooker faced threats and insults as a result. Despite considering his joke crude and primitive, he found the reaction to be foolish. In 2000, Brooker began working on television, initially as one of the writers for 'The Eleven O'Clock Show' on Channel 4. He also co-hosted 'Knowledge's The Kit' on BBC with Gia Milinovich. From 2006, Brooker has hosted his own television program called 'Screenwipe' on BBC Four. The show features clips from other TV shows, interrupted by Brooker's commentary, followed by his own blunt-style discussions about the television industry. In 2008, Brooker wrote the script for the zombie horror series 'Dead Set', which took place in the setting of the reality show 'Big Brother' and aired alongside the actual show.
