Charlie McGee: The Firestarter
Early LifeCharlene Roberta "Charlie" McGee is a fictional character created by Stephen King. She possesses the extraordinary ability of pyrokinesis, the power to create and manipulate fire with her mind. This gift stems from her parents' involvement in an experiment involving the mysterious "Lot 6," which also granted them enhanced abilities.
Discovery of Her Powers
As a young child, Charlie's pyrokinesis manifests, and her father, Andy McGee, realizes the danger it poses. He trains her to control her powers and use them only in dire situations. However, the Shop, the organization behind the Lot 6 experiment, becomes aware of Charlie's abilities and pursues her family.
Kidnapped by the Shop
The Shop kills Charlie's mother and captures her and Andy. Despite Andy's mind-control abilities, they are eventually apprehended. Charlie undergoes a series of experiments, while John Rainbird, a cunning Shop operative, manipulates her.
Escape and Redemption
Andy regains his strength and communicates with Charlie. With the help of Rainbird, disguised as a janitor, they develop an escape plan. However, Rainbird's true nature is revealed, and Andy is fatally wounded. Charlie unleashes her full pyrokinetic power, destroying Rainbird and the Shop.
Aftermath
In the novel, Charlie visits the offices of "Rolling Stone" to share her story, leaving the ending open-ended. The film sequel "Firestarter 2: Rekindled" depicts Charlie as a young woman hiding her abilities. The Shop returns to eliminate witnesses, leading Charlie to confront Rainbird and an army of boys with extraordinary powers. Ultimately, Rainbird is defeated, but at a significant cost.
