Early Life and Family
Valérie-Alexandrine-Françoise Delaunay (later known as Valentíne Delessert) was born in a distinguished family on June 1, 1824. Her grandfather, Jean-Joseph de Laborde, was a renowned financier, while her father, Alexandre de Laborde, served as a prominent politician and archaeologist. Her mother, Thérèse de Cabre, was also a notable figure. Valentíne had a brother, Léon de Laborde, who continued the family legacy in archaeology and politics.
Marriage and Family
On June 1, 1824, Valentíne married Gabriel Delessert, an heir to a prominent banking dynasty. The couple had two children: Édouard Delessert, an artist, archaeologist, and photographer; and Cécile Delessert, who married Alexis de Valon, an archaeologist and explorer.
Meeting Prosper Mérimée
Valentíne's connection to the literary world began in the early 1830s when she met Prosper Mérimée at the home of Count d'Argout. Their friendship quickly blossomed into a passionate affair that lasted for fifteen years.
