Biography of Charlotte Elisabeth Sophie Wilhelmine Alefeld

Charlotte Elisabeth Sophie Wilhelmine von Alefeld was a German writer and a representative of the Alefeld family. She was born on December 6, 1781, in Stedten near Weimar, in the family of Hanoverian colonel von Seebach. At the age of sixteen, she published her first novel "Liebe und Trennung". In 1798, she married landowner I.R. von Alenfeld, but soon, in 1807, she had to divorce him. After the divorce, she earned a living as a writer and lived first in Schleswig and then, from 1821, in Weimar.

Notable Works

Among her numerous novels, which she published under the name Elisa Seubig, the following deserve special mention: "Liebe und Entsagung" (Berlin, 1805, 2 volumes); "Stiefs?hne" (Altona, 1810); "Klosterberuf" (Kiel, 1812); "Franziska und Aenneli" (Altona, 1813); "Myrthe und Schwert" (Meissen, 1819); "Evna" (Altona, 1820); "Felicita" (Berlin, 1825); "Das R?mhildslift" (Weimar, 1828, 2 volumes); "Gesammelte Erz?hlungen" (Schleswig, 1822, 2 volumes); her last story was "Der Stab der Pflicht" (Weimar, 1832). Additionally, together with her friend Wilhelmine Genzike (born Herz), she published collections such as "Schmetterlinge" (Meissen, 1819-1821) and "Der Kranz" (Meissen, 1817-1818).

Critique and Poetry

According to the Encyclopedia of Brockhaus and Efron, her novels, written in a sentimental style, lack life experience, vivid and creative imagination, and profound inspiration. This also applies to her "Gedichte" (poems), which were published in Berlin in 1808 and later in Weimar in 1824 under the pseudonym Natalie.

Death

Charlotte Elisabeth Sophie Wilhelmine von Alefeld died on July 27, 1849, in Teplice, where her sons erected a gravestone for her.
