Charlotte Krętzschmar: Germany's Oldest Living Person
Charlotte Krętzschmar, a German supercentenarian, holds the distinction of being Germany's oldest living person. Her age has been verified by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) and the LongeviQuest (LQ) Group. After the passing of Maria Branyas Morera on August 19, 2024, she became the second-oldest living person in Europe.
Early Life and Family
Charlotte Krętzschmar was born on December 3, 1909, in Breslau, Germany. She hailed from a middle-class family and had several siblings. Her grandparents owned a farm in Pomerania.
Active Lifestyle
During her youth, Charlotte was an avid athlete who participated in track and field competitions. She credits this active lifestyle as the key to her longevity. Through sports, she met her future husband, Werner Lindemann. Together, they welcomed a daughter, Sigrid.
World War II and Loss
During World War II, Charlotte's husband fought on the frontlines while she remained in their hometown. However, towards the end of the war, she fled to Stuttgart, where she reunited with her husband, who had survived thanks to the German Red Cross. Tragically, both Charlotte's husband and daughter passed away before her.
Later Years
After experiencing a stroke, Charlotte moved into a nursing home in Kirchheim unter Teck. Despite her age, she maintained a relatively good level of health. Her parents both reportedly lived into their 90s. Charlotte passed away peacefully in Kirchheim unter Teck on August 27, 2024, at the age of 114 years and 268 days.
Longevity Records
On December 3, 2019, Charlotte celebrated her 110th birthday. With the passing of Anna Czerniechowska on September 18, 2022, she became the oldest living person in Germany at the age of 112. On August 8, 2023, she surpassed the age of Josefine Ollmann (113 years and 248 days), becoming the oldest person to have ever lived in Germany. Her age was verified by the Gerontology Research Group on August 23, 2023, and LongeviQuest on December 22, 2023.
