Biography of Cher Wang

Cher Wang is a Taiwanese entrepreneur and philanthropist, best known as the founder and chairperson of HTC Corporation, one of the leading smartphone manufacturers in the world. She is rightfully considered one of the most successful and influential women in the high-tech industry.

Early Life and Education

Cher Wang's father, Wang Yung-ching, was one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs in Taiwan, with a substantial fortune from his conglomerate, Formosa Plastics Group. Cher studied in Oakland, California, and obtained a master's degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981.

Entrepreneurial Career

In 1982, Cher Wang joined First International Computer and five years later, in 1987, she founded VIA Technologies. The corporation HTC was launched ten years later, in 1997.

Recognition and Philanthropy

In May 2011, Forbes magazine named Cher Wang and her husband, Wen Chi Chen, the CEO of VIA Technologies, as the richest residents of Taiwan. In August 2012, Cher Wang, now without her husband, ranked 56th in Forbes' list of the 100 most powerful women in the world.

Cher Wang is a devout Christian and a dedicated philanthropist. Interestingly, she prefers to engage in charity work without seeking attention. However, some of her philanthropic endeavors have become known to the public. In 2011, Wang donated $28.1 million to establish a charitable college in Southeast China. This college offers three-year courses for students from underprivileged families, with some courses being free. Cher Wang has expressed her intention to sponsor the creation of several more similar institutions in different parts of the country if this college proves to be a successful project.

It is also known that Cher Wang has made significant donations to the University of California, Berkeley. She supports the university's American Physical Society's Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize. Moreover, she and Chen also support a joint American-Chinese psychological program that unites the University of California and Tsinghua University in Beijing.

In August 2012, Cher Wang gifted 6,000 HTC Flyer tablets to schools in Taipei.
