Childhood and Education

Cheryl Campbell was born in St. Albans, England. She attended Francis Bacon School and later trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Theater Career

Campbell's extensive theater career includes work with the Worthing Palace Theatre, Birmingham Rep, and the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. However, her most notable stage role was as Nora in Ibsen's "A Doll's House" for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1982. For this performance, she received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Revival. She returned to the RSC in 1992, playing Lady Macbeth, Beatrice-Joanna in "The Changeling," Mistress Ford in "The Merry Wives of Windsor," and Natasha in "Misha's Party."

Campbell has also performed in the Royal National Theatre. In 1975, she played minor roles in "John Gabriel Borkman" and "Engaged." In 1995, she took on the role of Lady Would-Be in "Volpone." In 2003, she played Dotty Otley in "Noises Off."

Television and Film Career

Campbell is best known to television audiences for her leading role in the British miniseries "Testament of Youth," based on Vera Brittain's memoir. For this performance, she won both the BAFTA TV Award and the Broadcasting Press Guild Award for Best Actress. Her other notable television roles include Eileen Eversen in Dennis Potter's "Pennies from Heaven" and Lady Budd in "The Budd Affair."

On the big screen, Campbell has appeared in films such as the Oscar-winning "Chariots of Fire" and the 1984 classic "The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes."
