Biography of Cesare Ciardi

Cesare Ciardi was an Italian flutist virtuoso and composer. He is considered one of the pioneers of professional flute playing education in Russia.

Early Life and Education

Ciardi was born in Italy and received his musical training from the city musicians Giuseppe Nuti and Luigi Carlezi.

Early Career

In 1827, Ciardi performed at the princely palace in Genoa, where he was introduced to the audience by Nicolo Paganini. In the following years, he extensively toured and even undertook a concert trip to London.

Life in Russia

In 1853, Ciardi arrived in Russia and decided to stay there for the rest of his life. He worked as the principal flutist of the Italian Opera orchestra in St. Petersburg and also served as a soloist in the Imperial (Mariinsky) Theater orchestra. His colleagues in the group included Ernesto Koehler and Karl Venner.

He gave flute lessons in noble families and taught in the music classes of the Theater School. When the St. Petersburg Conservatory was opened in 1862, Ciardi started teaching flute there. P.I. Tchaikovsky took flute lessons from him and occasionally accompanied Ciardi on concerts as a pianist.

Artistry and Contributions

Ciardi was renowned for his smooth, pure, and beautiful sound, impeccable taste, and flawless technique. He played the classical flute in the Viennese style. His instrument of choice was an old wooden flute from the Koch company with a cracked headjoint, but he produced such a clean, beautiful sound with such elegance and taste that Rudall exclaimed, "He is fit to play before a chorus of angels!"

Ciardi authored the textbook "School of Flute Playing" (1862), which contained information on music notation and music theory and included the latest material from Russian and foreign music. He also composed numerous pieces, including the well-known "Russian Carnival" for flute and piano, and arranged works for the flute.
