Early years and musical experiences
Chico Hamilton, an American jazz musician, was born in 1921 in Los Angeles. As a schoolboy, he began his musical journey by assembling a small jazz band with his classmates. During this time, Chico played the clarinet. However, it was during his time in the army that he discovered his passion for drums and started writing music.
Collaboration with Lena Horne
In 1948, Chico Hamilton joined forces with popular jazz vocalist Lena Horne. Their creative alliance lasted for six years and included a successful European tour. Alongside this collaboration, Chico worked in studios, participated in various jazz gatherings, and played in different ensembles. During this period, Chico Hamilton firmly established his niche in the vast jazz landscape. His talent was evident, his ambitions were grand, and in 1955, he formed his own group, an unconventional quintet with a unique sound and instrumentation.
The Quintet and musical career
Named the Chico Hamilton Quintet, the group consisted of cello, flute, guitar, bass, and drums. The quintet achieved success, embarking on constant tours. With each change in location, Hamilton consistently refreshed the lineup of his jazz band. Though the group experienced personnel changes, their musical career remained unaffected. The Chico Hamilton Quintet appeared in films and actively recorded music. In 1962, with a newly revamped lineup, the group composed music for the first American film to penetrate the "Iron Curtain."
Musical collaborations
It is worth noting that Chico Hamilton's jazz band did not have a consistent, unchanging lineup. Jazz musicians are extraordinary individuals, and their music does not tolerate uniformity. Assembling different formations, they improvise, seeking new paths and sounds. Conventionalities found in typical musical ensembles are unnecessary in jazz. Chico Hamilton had the opportunity to play with many significant figures in the jazz world, including Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Billie Holiday, Jim Hall, Charlie Lloyd, and many other legendary jazz personalities.
Later life and legacy
In 1994, Chico Hamilton became the subject of the documentary film "Dancing to a Different Drummer" by Julian Benedikt. In August 2001, the Chico Hamilton Quintet performed at the Lincoln Center. Chico Hamilton also taught at "The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music" in New York. In the spring of 2003, he underwent heart surgery. Hamilton received numerous awards for his immense contributions to the development of jazz art in America.
On November 25, 2013, Chico Hamilton passed away at the age of 92 in Manhattan.
