John Larkin, also known as Scatman John, had a challenging childhood due to his stuttering, which caused him many problems. However, music became his way of communication, and he found solace in playing the piano, which he received as a gift when he was twelve years old. At the age of fourteen, he was inspired by Ella Fitzgerald's scat singing in the song "How High The Moon," which became a significant influence on his musical journey. He admired artists such as Louis Armstrong, Stan Getz, and John Coltrane from a young age.

Struggles and Addiction

Despite finding his voice through music, John's stuttering continued to cause him suffering in his everyday life. At the age of fourteen, he began experimenting with alcohol, believing it helped boost his confidence. As he pursued a career in jazz, he faced a challenging and often unnoticed path, which led him towards drug addiction. In 1984, he recorded several compositions with his friend, saxophonist Joe Farrell, who was also a drug addict.
