C. R. Das: The "Deshbandhu"
Early Life and CareerC. R. Das, born into the renowned Das family, received his legal education in the United Kingdom, becoming a barrister. His public career commenced in 1909 with his successful defense of Sri Aurobindo in the Alipore Bomb Case.
Indian Nationalist Movement
Das emerged as a prominent figure during the Non-Cooperation Movement (1919-1922), leading by example as he burnt his European attire and donned khadi. He also launched the newspapers "Forward" and "Liberty."
Leadership of the Indian National Congress
In December 1922, Das became the President of the Indian National Congress. However, his proposed program was rejected, prompting him to resign. He subsequently formed the Congress-Khilafat Swarajya Party with Motilal Nehru.
Electoral Success and Collaboration
The Swarajya Party achieved significant electoral gains in 1923, winning 45 seats in the central Legislative Assembly and securing strong positions in several provincial assemblies. Upon Mahatma Gandhi's release from prison in 1924, it was agreed that the Swarajyists would represent the Indian National Congress in legislative assemblies.
Legacy
Das's health deteriorated in 1925, and he retreated to his home in Darjeeling, where he passed away on June 16, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a prominent Indian nationalist and leader of the swaraj movement.
