Clara Rojas: A Colombian Jurist and Advocate
Early Life and EducationClara Rojas was born in Bogotá, Colombia, on December 20, 1964. She graduated from the University of Rosario in Bogotá with a degree in law.
Kidnapping and Imprisonment
On February 23, 2002, Rojas and former senator and presidential candidate Íngrid Betancourt were kidnapped by guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) near San Vicente del Caguán. During her six years of captivity, Rojas was named as Betancourt's vice-presidential running mate.
Pregnancy and Childbirth in Captivity
During her imprisonment, Rojas became pregnant by her captors and gave birth to a son, Emmanuel. The guerrillas took the eight-month-old baby from her, claiming he required medical attention, but he was actually given to a peasant family to raise.
Release and Aftermath
Rojas was released from captivity in 2008 through the diplomatic efforts of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. She subsequently published a book, "Captive," which was translated into over 13 languages. Three years later, she reunited with her son after a long search. The child's father had tragically died during a guerrilla operation.
Advocacy and Rehabilitation
In 2010, Rojas became the Executive Director of the Pais Libre Foundation, which provides assistance to victims of kidnapping for over 20 years. In 2012, she was invited to represent victims in the peace negotiations with FARC in Havana as one of 60 victims of the conflict.
Legacy
Clara Rojas's resilience and advocacy have made her a symbol of hope for victims of violence. Her work as an author, speaker, and advocate has raised awareness about the plight of kidnap victims and promoted reconciliation in her country.
