A Life of Challenges
Born an active and vivacious child, Chloe enjoyed horseback riding, working in stables, and practicing Zumba. However, all of that is now a distant memory. At just 20 years old, she is confined to a wheelchair and relies heavily on her family and carers for her daily needs.
A Multitude of Allergies
Chloe's body seems determined to make her life as challenging as possible. She is allergic to a wide range of substances, including metals, emotions, and even her own body's reactions. This has rendered her vulnerable to unpredictable and potentially life-threatening allergic reactions.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
Adding to her difficulties is a condition called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which affects her joints, causing them to dislocate with even the slightest movement. As a result, Chloe is unable to bathe, dress, eat, or move without assistance from her mother.
A Long Hospitalization
In 2021, Chloe was hospitalized for seven months due to the severity of her allergies. While avoiding known allergens can help manage her symptoms, the vast array of potential triggers makes it impossible to eliminate all risks.
Unpredictable Reactions
Chloe's allergies manifest in various ways, including skin rashes, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty breathing. The severity of these reactions can vary from mild to life-threatening, making her life unpredictable and dangerous.
Emotions as Allergens
One of the most unusual and challenging aspects of Chloe's condition is her allergy to emotions. On one occasion, a visit from her family while she was hospitalized resulted in a severe allergic reaction, revealing that her own happiness could trigger her symptoms.
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome
In 2009, Chloe was diagnosed with a rare heart condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This causes her heart rate to spike unexpectedly, leading to episodes of fainting and loss of consciousness, which are particularly dangerous given her joint problems.
A Rare Discovery
Chloe's allergies emerged relatively recently, first appearing while on a holiday to Tenerife. After jumping into the sea, she experienced dizziness and nausea. What initially seemed like a minor irritation escalated into a severe allergic reaction that required a prolonged hospital stay.
Dysfunction of the Nervous System
Medical investigations revealed that Chloe's allergies are linked to problems with her autonomic nervous system, which controls essential bodily functions like heart rate, digestion, and temperature regulation. Dysregulation of this system leads to unpredictable reactions throughout her body.
Mastocytosis
Chloe was also diagnosed with mastocytosis, a condition that affects her mast cells. These cells release histamine and other chemicals in response to allergens, triggering allergic reactions. Unfortunately, Chloe's mast cells are overly sensitive, recognizing even harmless substances as threats.
Frequent Hospital Visits and Dislocations
Chloe requires frequent hospital visits, often more than 20 times a month. She also experiences near-daily joint dislocations, which her mother has become adept at reducing.
A Desire for Independence
Despite her severe limitations, Chloe yearns for independence. She is working towards making her home more accessible with adaptive technologies, hoping to regain some semblance of her former life. However, her health challenges have significantly altered the trajectory of her future, and she faces an ongoing struggle to overcome them.
