Biography of Cho Seung-Hui

Cho Seung-Hui, the perpetrator of the mass shooting at Virginia Tech, was born in South Korea. In 1992, he immigrated to the United States with his family and settled in Virginia. His parents owned a dry cleaning business.

Cho attended Westfield High School in Chantilly, Virginia, and graduated in 2003. During his time in high school, he displayed strange behavior and had a reputation as a loner. There were reports that he set fire to a dormitory and harassed multiple women. Additionally, he was taking medication for depression.

In the fall of 2006, six months before the tragic events, Cho wrote two plays as part of an assignment for an English language and literature course. These plays exhibited a clear inclination towards violence, with characters engaging in fights, killings, and humiliation.

Following the shootings, a note was found in Cho's room expressing his hatred towards "rich kids," "debauchery," and "phony charlatans" on campus. On the inside of his hand, a message was written in red ink that read "Ismail Ax."

On April 16, 2007, at 7:15 a.m., Cho entered a residential building in the student village of Virginia Tech armed with Glock and Walther pistols and began shooting. He killed two people before moving to Norris Hall, a classroom building, where he barricaded the entrance and started firing at students. He went from one classroom to another, locking the doors and shooting everyone inside. Only a few students managed to escape by jumping out of windows.

Cho ultimately took his own life. The shooting claimed the lives of 33 people, including students, two professors, and the perpetrator himself. Around 30 others were injured. It is estimated that Cho fired between 130 and 150 shots during the attack.

In a final note, Cho expressed his frustration with materialism and the excessive lifestyles of others. He believed that his actions would serve as a example for the weak and defenseless.
