Early Life and Education
Born in Deridder, Louisiana, on November 10, 1968, Chris Cagle grew up in Baytown, Texas. He developed an interest in music early on, taking piano lessons in high school before switching to guitar. After graduating in 1987, he briefly attended the University of Texas at Arlington but dropped out after a year.
Struggles and Success
For the next five years, Cagle bounced around Nashville, working in various jobs while trying to break into the music industry. He assisted in songwriting and recording for David Kersh and even waited tables at a restaurant. It was during this time that he was spotted by an A&R representative from Virgin Records' Nashville branch, who signed him to a contract.
"Play It Loud" and Virgin Records
Cagle's debut album, "Play It Loud," was released in mid-2000. The lead single, "My Love Goes On and On," and the follow-up, "Laredo," both cracked the Billboard Top 100. After Virgin Records closed in 2001, the album was reissued by Capitol Records with the addition of "I Breathe In, I Breathe Out."
"Anywhere but Here" and Vocal Cord Issues
Cagle released his second album, "Anywhere but Here," in mid-2003. The album featured the Top 5 hits "What a Beautiful Day," "Chicks Dig It," and "I'd Be Lying." However, in early 2004, Cagle was diagnosed with several vocal cord ailments, including polyps, nodules, a cyst, and a granuloma. He was forced to take a hiatus and cancel scheduled solo shows.
"My Life's Been a Country Song" and Capitol Records Departure
After his recovery, Cagle worked on his third album, "My Life's Been a Country Song," which was released in 2005. The album featured the singles "Miss Me Baby," "Wal-Mart Parking Lot," and the title track. Cagle's eleventh single, "What Kinda Gone," reached number three on the country charts in late 2007 and was the lead single for his fourth studio album, which was released in February 2008. The album's second single, "No Love Songs," was released in May of that year, followed by the album in August. Shortly after, Cagle parted ways with Capitol Records.
Personal Life
Cagle married Elizabeth Faithler in 2001, but the couple later divorced. He is not the father of Elizabeth's daughter, as he has stated on his official website.
