Early Life and Musical Influences
Matthew Shafer, better known as Uncle Kracker, was born in 1974 in Mount Clemens, Michigan. Growing up in Harrison Township with his brother Mike, he developed an early interest in music. However, he struggled to find a style that truly resonated with him. One fateful night in 1987, Mike, a DJ, took Matthew to a DJ competition at Clawson's Nite Club.
Birth of Uncle Kracker
While attending the competition, Matthew was particularly drawn to rap music. By the age of 13, his friend Richie, the same DJ from the competition, had given him the nickname Kracker. Inspired by his passion for rap, Matthew immersed himself in the genre, studying its history, styles, and lyrics.
Collaboration with Kid Rock
Matthew's musical journey took a significant turn when he met Kid Rock. Kid Rock became his mentor, teaching him the nuances of rap and honing his performance skills. Kracker eventually joined Kid Rock's crew, "Twisted Brown Trucker," and remained with the group even after launching his solo career.
Solo Success
In 2000, Matthew released his debut album, "Double Wide," under the name Uncle Kracker. The album achieved critical and commercial success, reaching "double-platinum" status and staying in the "Billboard 200" for nine months. Kid Rock served as the album's producer. Uncle Kracker followed up with "No Stranger to Shame" in 2002 and "Seventy Two and Sunny" in 2004, the latter marking a shift towards country music.
Return to Country and Recent Releases
After a hiatus, Uncle Kracker returned with his fourth album, "Happy Hour," in 2009. It was another country-influenced album that produced the hit single "Smile." The album was followed by "Cigarettes and One Night Stands" in 2011, which featured collaborations with Kid Rock.
Personal Life and Legacy
Uncle Kracker married his childhood sweetheart, Melanie Haas, in 1998. They have three daughters together. Despite his success and demanding career, he has often expressed regret for missing out on some of his daughters' childhood. Uncle Kracker remains a respected and influential figure in both rap and country music, known for his catchy lyrics and unique blend of styles.
