Early Life and Influences
Chris Dave was born in Houston, Texas, and began his musical journey in the late 1980s. Dave's early musical experiences took place in church, and he credits jazz as his primary musical influence. As a teenager, he was introduced to jazz legends such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane through his father's record collection.
Education and Early Career
Dave excelled as a drummer and eventually graduated from Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He continued his education at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he met renowned producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, former collaborators with Prince. These connections paved the way for Dave's professional career, and he began working with R&B group Mint Condition.
Collaboration and Recognition
Dave gained further recognition as the drummer for Bilal, touring with the singer after the release of his unreleased and leaked album "Love for Sale." In 2008, he joined Jill Scott on her "The Real Thing Tour." Dave's reputation as an exemplary drummer and his signature high-level of syncopation brought him to the attention of renowned alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett. Dave played on Garrett's album "Standard of Language" before joining the Robert Glasper Experiment and recording on Adele's Grammy-winning album "21."
Chris Dave and the Drumhedz
In 2018, Dave founded his own group, Chris Dave and the Drumhedz. Their self-titled debut album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. The group showcases Dave's innovative and virtuosic drumming style, solidifying his status as one of the most influential jazz drummers of the modern era.
