Biography of Chris Henry
Early Life and High School CareerChris Henry was born on May 17, 1983, in the small town of Belle Chasse on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Louisiana. He excelled in sports from a young age and attended high school where he was named the "Best Offensive Player of the Year" for New Orleans schools. During his senior year, his team, the 'Fighting Cardinals,' reached the finals of the state youth league championship held at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. Chris also achieved success in basketball and track and field.
College Career
In 2002, Chris Henry enrolled at West Virginia University where he specialized in coaching track and field. However, he did not compete in any events during his first academic year. In 2003, he participated in the Big East Conference and became the Freshman of the Year. He recorded 41 receptions, 1,006 rushing yards, and 10 touchdowns. He also became the second player in the college's history to record over 1,000 yards in a season. His best reception of the season came against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, where he caught a pass for 83 yards. In the following season, Chris Henry started seven games, recorded 52 receptions, rushed for 872 yards, and scored 12 touchdowns.
NFL Career and Troubles
After a successful college career, Chris Henry was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He made his debut on September 18, 2005, against the Minnesota Vikings. In his first season, he caught 31 passes for 422 yards and scored 6 touchdowns. In the playoffs against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he made a 66-yard reception. However, during this game, he suffered a serious knee injury. In his second season, Chris recorded 36 receptions, 605 yards, and 9 touchdowns.
Throughout his professional career, Chris Henry had a series of legal troubles, including several arrests for drunk driving, marijuana possession, physical assault, and causing harm. His behavior led to him being suspended for the first four games of the 2008 season. He was released by the Bengals after his arrest in April 2008, but later signed a two-year contract with the team in August 2008. However, his return was deemed futile by the team's coach, Marvin Lewis. Chris Henry finished the 2008 season with 19 receptions, 220 yards, and 2 touchdowns. In November 2009, he broke his arm during a game against the Baltimore Ravens and was placed on reserve.
Tragic Death
On December 17, 2009, Chris Henry tragically died in a freak accident in Charlotte, North Carolina. The night before, he had an argument with his fiancée, Loleini Tonga, who got into a pickup truck and attempted to drive away. The football player jumped into the moving truck's bed but couldn't hold on and fell, suffering a fatal head injury. No charges were filed against Miss Tonga. Chris Henry was only 26 years old. To honor his memory, a minute of silence was observed before each game during the 15th week from December 17 to 21.
