Biography of Christian Mortensen

Christian Mortensen, a Danish-American supercentenarian, was born in 1882 near the Danish city of Skanderborg, Denmark. He began working at a young age and became an apprentice tailor at the age of 16. Throughout his life, Mortensen worked in various places, eventually settling for hired farm work. Little did he know that his own life would turn out to be incredibly long.

In 1903, Mortensen left Denmark and relocated to the United States. He settled in Chicago, where he had relatives, and worked as a milkman, as well as in a restaurant and later as a worker at the Continental Can Company. His only marriage was not particularly strong and did not produce any children. Later in life, Mortensen never remarried or entered into any long-term relationships with women.

In 1950, Mortensen retired while residing in Texas. Almost three decades later, at the age of 96, he moved to California and settled in a retirement home. Despite his advancing age, Mortensen's health remained stable, easily surpassing the age of 100 without any major health complaints except for his deteriorating eyesight.

It is known that Mortensen occasionally smoked cigars and insisted that smoking, in moderation, does not harm one's health. He was a vegetarian and only drank boiled water. His eyesight was the first to fail him, and in his last years, he became blind and relied on a wheelchair for mobility. Nevertheless, at the time of his death in 1998, Christian Mortensen had lived for 115 years and 252 days, setting an absolute record for longevity among men. His record was only surpassed in 2013 by Japanese supercentenarian Jiroemon Kimura.

Unfortunately, Mortensen passed away without any surviving relatives, making him a solitary individual in his final days. In addition to his world record, Christian Mortensen held records for longevity in both the United States and Denmark. He was also the only Scandinavian to surpass the age of 113. It was noted that Mortensen, who died at the age of 115, passed away on the 115th day of the year.

Mortensen's documents were in perfect order, and he had no trouble proving his date of birth, unlike many other supercentenarians who often face difficulties with paperwork. He provided a baptismal record, as well as census data from Denmark for 1890 and 1901. Among his numerous titles, Mortensen was recognized as the oldest living Dane and the oldest American immigrant.
