Biography of Chubby Checker

Ernest Evans, the singer known as Chubby Checker, was born on October 3, 1941. Little did anyone know at the time that this African-American boy would later become the king of twist. Evans was introduced to music at a young age and formed his first street vocal group at the age of eight. While attending school, he also learned to play the drums and piano, and continued to practice his vocal skills. In the evenings, Ernest worked in a supermarket, entertaining shoppers with his singing and banter.

The owner of the store, Henry Colt, was impressed by Evans' performances and took every opportunity to arrange auditions for him. One day, Colt introduced his protégé to the famous TV host Dick Clark, who helped him secure his first contract. Interestingly, it was Clark's wife who suggested the stage name Chubby Checker for the young talent. The name "Checker" was chosen due to Evans' fondness for checkered suits.

The Twist and Success

Initially, Chubby Checker's first single "The Class" didn't attract much attention, although glimpses of his talent were already evident. The turning point in Checker's career came with the opportunity to record the song "The Twist." Initially, the head of Cameo-Parkway Records didn't like this cover of Hank Ballard and The Midnighters and decided to make it a B-side. However, the company's director failed to grasp the essence of the situation, and the story took a different turn. Chubby Checker took it upon himself to promote "The Twist" through live performances, TV appearances, and various interviews. Gradually, the song gained popularity on the airwaves and eventually became a national hit in August 1960. Other performers also caught the twist fever, but the crown of the twist belonged to Chubby Checker.

Continued Success and Decline

In 1961, Chubby Checker released his next hit titled "The Pony," which topped the national charts for sixteen weeks. "The Twist" made a comeback and spent nine months on the charts. Merchandise featuring Chubby Checker flooded the market in America, including t-shirts, shoes, coats, dolls, chewing gum, ties, and other trinkets. Checker's popularity remained strong until the mid-1960s, during which time he released numerous hits such as "The Fly," "Let's Twist Again," "Slow Twistin'," "Dancin' Party," "Limbo Rock," "Popeye the Hitchhiker," "Birdland," and "Twist It Up." He also appeared in films like "Twist Around the Clock" and "Don't Knock the Twist."

With the arrival of the "British Invasion," Checker's popularity began to decline, and he had to perform in smaller clubs. However, the "twist master" didn't completely give up on his musical career and continued to perform during subsequent waves of interest in retro music in the following decades.
