In 1972, Valdés founded Irakere, one of Cuba's most celebrated Latin jazz bands. Together with pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Valdés is widely recognized as one of the greatest Cuban jazz pianists of all time. Irakere's unique fusion of Cuban rhythms and jazz improvisation earned them international acclaim.
Grammy-Winning Achievements
Valdés's exceptional musicianship has been honored with three Grammy Awards. In 1978, Irakere's "Live at Newport" album garnered his first Grammy. Two decades later, his jazz band Crisol's album "Havana" earned him another Grammy for his compositions "Mr. Bruce" and "Mambo para Roy." In 2003, his "Live at the Village Vanguard" album received a third Grammy.
