Lila Downs was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, to Anita Sánchez, an indigenous Mixtec cabaret singer, and Allen Downs, a film professor from Minnesota. Growing up in Oaxaca, California, and later Minnesota, she immersed herself in diverse cultures. She earned degrees in vocal performance and anthropology from the University of Minnesota.

Combining traditional Mexican music with original compositions, Lila Downs's music incorporates elements of blues, jazz, soul, African rhythms, and even Jewish klezmer. Her unique style has earned her a Grammy Award and two Latin Grammy Awards.
