However, in 2006, Chung Mong-koo faced legal troubles. He was accused of crimes related to embezzlement and other forms of corruption. In April of that year, he was even arrested and sentenced to three years in prison. However, his lawyer requested the court to release him on bail, and the chief judge announced that the prison sentence could be replaced with extensive community service and a donation of one billion dollars to a charity fund.
Hyundai Motor Group
During Chung Mong-koo's personal challenges, the family-owned company, Hyundai, thrived and expanded. Its history began in 1947 as a construction firm, and over time, it was reorganized to become the largest conglomerate in South Korea.
The company went through significant restructuring, including periods after the 1997 East Asian financial crisis and the founder's death in 2001. Currently, the main components of the Hyundai Motor Group include Hyundai Group, Hyundai Kia Automotive Group, Hyundai Department Store Group, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, and Hyundai Development Group.
Hyundai Motor Group is now a global corporation and the fifth-largest car manufacturer in the world. Another subsidiary, Hyundai Heavy Industries, is the largest shipbuilder globally, and Hynix is a leading semiconductor manufacturer. The company truly lives up to its name, as "hyundai" translates to "modern" in the Korean language.
