Early Life and FamilyBorn into a prominent Viennese family, Emil Jellinek was the son of renowned rabbi Adolf Jellinek. His father's intellectual prowess and connections shaped Jellinek's own ambitions and interests.
Business Career
In the late 19th century, Jellinek became a prominent figure in the automotive industry. He joined the board of directors of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in 1900, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the company's technical direction.
The Creation of Mercedes
Jellinek was instrumental in defining the technical specifications for a new internal combustion engine that Wilhelm Maybach eventually built. He requested that the car produced by DMG be named after his young daughter, Mercedes Jellinek. In 1902, the name "Mercedes" was officially registered as a trademark.
Ambassador and Legacy
Jellinek lived in Vienna before relocating to Nice, where he served as the Austro-Hungarian consul general. In 1903, he was granted official permission to change his surname to Jellinek-Mercedes. His daughter's name would forever be synonymous with one of the most iconic automobile brands in history.
