Early Life and Acting PursuitsBorn on February 9, 1953, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Ciarán Hinds' artistic journey began at a young age with traditional Irish dancing. Despite pursuing degrees in business and law, his passion for acting led him to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1975.
Stage Success
Hinds' theatrical debut was in Chekhov's "The Seagull" at RADA. After graduating, he joined the Citizens' Theatre in Glasgow, where he performed in various productions, including "Cinderella" and "Macbeth." Notable performances include the 1987's "The Mahābhārata," which toured globally, and the 1997's "Closer" in London, earning him a Theatre World Award. His later stage credits include "Strife" in 2009 and Shakespeare's "Hamlet" in 2015.
Film Career
Hinds made his film debut in 1981 but took an eight-year hiatus for theater. He returned to cinema with supporting roles in "Excalibur" and "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover." Notable film appearances include "Persuasion," "The Phantom of the Opera," and "In Bruges." In 2011, he played Aberforth Dumbledore in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2."
Superheroic Roles
Hinds has portrayed iconic characters in superhero universes, such as Memphisto in "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," Steppenwolf in "Justice League" and "Zack Snyder's Justice League." He also appeared in the science fiction action film "John Carter."
"Game of Thrones" and Beyond
In 2013, Hinds joined the cast of "Game of Thrones" as Mance Rayder, a deserter from the Night's Watch who became the King-Beyond-the-Wall. His character's fate was sealed in Season 5.
Personal Life
Hinds met French-Vietnamese actress Hélène Patarot during the filming of "The Mahābhārata." They have been in a long-term relationship but never married. Their daughter, Aoife Hinds, has followed in her parents' footsteps as an actress.
Recent Projects and Accolades
Hinds continues to captivate audiences on stage and screen. His performance as the grandfather in "Belfast" (2021) earned him nominations for the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This marks the first time Hinds has been nominated for an Oscar, having previously been recognized for his work in "Munich" and "There Will Be Blood."
