Ciniod I, King of the Picts
Ciniod I ascended to the throne of the Picts in 763, succeeding his presumed father, Feradach, son of Selbach Mac Ferreol, the imprisoned King of Dál Riata. His reign is often omitted from the king lists in the Pictish Chronicle, but his death is recorded in the Annals of Ulster, the Annals of Cambria, and the Chronicle of Melrose.
Battle of Fortriu
In 768, during Ciniod's reign, the Annals of Ulster report a battle in Fortriu fought against the Dál Riata under the leadership of Aed Find. This marks the first mention of Dál Riata since 741. The outcome of the battle remains unknown.
The Annals of the Four Masters
The Annals of the Four Masters, though less reliable, provides an alternative account of the battle of 768. It places the conflict in Leinster and credits victory to Sinaed Mac Flainn of Uí Fáilgi, who defeated an unnamed enemy named Aed.
Alchred of Northumbria
According to Simeon of Durham, Alchred, the deposed King of Northumbria, sought refuge in Ciniod's court after being overthrown in 774.
Ciniod's Death
Ciniod's death is recorded as "Cinadhon, King of the Picts" in multiple independent sources in 775. While his sons are unknown, the death of "Eithne ingen Cinadhon," presumably his daughter, is mentioned in the Annals of Ulster in 778.
