José María Arguedas: A Pioneer of Peruvian Indigenous Literature

Early Life and Identity

José María Arguedas was born in 1908 to white landowners but identified strongly with the indigenous peoples of his native Peru. His birth was registered a year later, hence his official date of birth became 1909.

Literary Career

Arguedas began publishing his writings in 1927. His work often explored the struggles and resilience of Peru's indigenous population, earning him recognition as a prominent voice in the indigenismo literary movement.

Exile and Death

In 1934, Arguedas went into exile in Chile, where he resided until his death. He was laid to rest in the "Pastor Matías Maestro" cemetery in Peru.

Literary Legacy

During his lifetime, Arguedas published three acclaimed novels:
"The Golden Serpent" (1935)
"The Hungry Dogs" (1939)
"The Wide and Alien World" (1941)

His death in 1969 left behind several unfinished novels and unpublished stories, which were later published posthumously by his wife and biographer, Dora Varona.
