Education and Early Career
Claire Gmachl pursued her undergraduate studies in physics at the University of Innsbruck, culminating in her diploma thesis in 1991 on "Nanostructuring of Semiconductor Surfaces Using Electron Beam Lithography." She then embarked on her doctoral research at the Vienna University of Technology, earning her Ph.D. in 1996 with a dissertation titled "Frequency-Tunable, Surface-Emitting Semiconductor Laser Diodes with Vertical Resonator."
Research Career
Dr. Gmachl's initial post-doctoral appointments included stints at the Technical University of Munich (1992-1994) and Vienna University of Technology (1995-1996). From 1996 to 2003, she held a doctoral fellowship at Lucent Technologies-Bell Laboratories in New Jersey.
In 2003, she joined the faculty of Princeton University as an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. She rose to the rank of Professor in 2007 and currently serves as Director of the Mid-InfraRed Technologies for Health and the Environment (MIRTHE) Engineering Research Center.
Research Focus
Dr. Gmachl has garnered renown for her groundbreaking work on quantum cascade lasers. These devices emit light in the mid-infrared wavelength range, offering applications in various scientific and technological fields, such as spectroscopy, chemical sensing, and medical diagnostics.
