Clara Tan: The Killer
Clara Tan, a resident of Australia of Chinese origin, is a candidate for the title of the oldest killer in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. She lived with her husband, Ching Yung Tang, for nearly 70 years. Their marriage was quite happy, and no one expected such a horrific ending. The attention of the press was drawn not only to the advanced age of the killer (92 years old) and the victim (98 years old) but also to the incredible brutality with which the murder was committed. Investigators concluded that Clara first beat her husband with a stick on the head, then attempted to strangle him, and finally stabbed him with a kitchen knife.
The Motive
What prompted Tan to commit such a terrible act? Was it due to domestic violence or her husband's aggressiveness? Unlikely, as 98-year-old Ching Yung had difficulty moving around the house, solely relying on a cane. Unfortunately, the likely cause is quite banal - Clara's brain had weakened with old age, and she developed dementia. This mental disorder led to paranoia in Tan; the elderly woman began to suspect her husband of trying to poison her.
A Life Filled with Turmoil
Before moving to Sydney 30 years ago, Clara and Ching Yung lived in Shanghai. They had experienced many significant events in their lifetime, including the Japanese invasion and the Maoist Cultural Revolution. Unfortunately, such a turbulent life severely affected the mental well-being of this otherwise harmless woman. For some time, the Tans lived peacefully in Sydney, and Clara did not display any signs of mental instability until her final years. Relatives recall that she had complained to them several times about Ching Yung, claiming that he was switching her plates of food and plotting something sinister. Unfortunately, these statements were not taken seriously, and no one saw any cause for concern.
The Verdict
It is likely that Tan's patience reached its limit, and she decided to deal with the alleged poisoner herself before he could harm her. Clara herself does not admit guilt and claims that she does not even remember what happened. The judges took into account the accused's advanced age and weak mental state. Consequently, Clara was declared mentally unfit for trial and sent to a nursing home. Now, her relatives will be responsible for her well-being and behavior, with the nursing home staff ensuring proper care and supervision.
