Biography of Claire Short
Claire Short, a prominent member of the British government and Minister for International Development, was born on February 15, 1946, in Birmingham. She completed her education at Leeds University in 1975 and joined the Labour Party. During the opposition of the Labour Party to the Conservatives, she held several positions in the shadow cabinet, where she was responsible for women's issues, transportation, employment, and international development.
Resignation Threat
On March 9th, Claire Short, one of the key members of the British government, declared that she would resign if the United Kingdom initiated a war against Iraq without the adoption of a corresponding resolution by the UN Security Council. In an interview with the BBC, she stated, "I believe it is time to lay the cards on the table - I will not support a violation of international law and undermine the authority of the UN." This statement further intensified the pressure on Tony Blair, who, according to the press, faced the threat of rebellion from at least 200 members of parliament who shared Claire Short's positions. The Prime Minister himself was "unpleasantly surprised" by the firm tone of his subordinate. Interestingly, her sentiments were shared by 85 percent of the members of the ruling Labour Party.
