Early Life and Education
Jack Straw was born on August 3, 1946, in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, England. He adopted the nickname "Jack" after a 14th-century peasant leader. At age 14, he joined the Labour Party and studied law at the University of Leeds.
Student Activism and Local Government
In university, Straw became active in student politics, serving as President of the Leeds University Union and later of the National Union of Students. He also practiced law from 1972 to 1974 and served on the Islington Borough Council from 1971 to 1978.
Parliamentary Career
Straw first ran for Parliament in 1974 but lost. He became an advisor to Barbara Castle and later Peter Shore before entering Parliament in 1979, representing Blackburn. In the 1980s and 1990s, he held various shadow cabinet positions and aligned himself with the "New Labour" wing of the party.
Labour Government
After the Labour victory in 1997, Straw became Home Secretary. However, his tenure was marked by controversies and scandals. In 2001, he moved to the Foreign Office, where he supported the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Return to Prominence
In 2006, Straw became Leader of the House of Commons but later returned to a senior role. He led Gordon Brown's campaign for the Labour leadership in 2007. When Brown became Prime Minister, Straw was appointed Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor.
