Claude Akins: Man of Power on Screen and in Life
Early Life and EducationClaude Marion Akins was born on May 25, 1926, in Nelson, Georgia, to a police officer father. Raised in Bedford, Indiana, he graduated from Northwestern University in 1949 with a degree in drama. While attending college, he became a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Film Career
Akins made his big-screen debut in the 1953 war drama "From Here to Eternity" as a sergeant. Throughout his career, he often portrayed tough-as-nails characters, both good and bad. Notable roles include Joe Berdett in "Rio Bravo," Naval Lt. Commander Farber in "Don't Give Up The Ship," Sgt. Kolowicz in "Merrill's Marauders," and Rockwell Rockman in "The Devil's Brigade." In "Comanche Station," he played the villainous Ben Lane, while in "Battle for the Planet of the Apes" (1973), he portrayed Aldo, the gorilla leader, owing to his imposing physique.
Television Career
Akins' television roles ranged from villains to gruff but ultimately kind-hearted figures. Some of his most memorable appearances include "Adventures of Superman," "The Twilight Zone," "Perry Mason," "City Detective," and "The Untouchables." He also made numerous guest appearances in popular Western series such as "Frontier," "My Friend Flicka," "Gunsmoke," and "Bonanza."
Safety Shorts and Later Career
In the late 1980s, Akins lent his distinctive voice to the "Safety Shorts" series of educational films. These videos aimed to educate industrial workers about workplace safety measures and equipment.
Akins continued to work in film and television until his death. He passed away on January 27, 1994, at the age of 67, after battling cancer.
Personal Life
Off-screen, Akins was known for his gregarious and friendly personality. He married Therese Fairfield in 1952, and they raised three children together. An avid golfer, he participated in both professional and charity tournaments. A close friend of actor Robert J. Wilke, the two shared a passion for the sport.
