Cliff Williams: The Bassist Behind the Legendary AC/DC

Early Life and Career

Born in London, England, Cliff Williams moved to Liverpool at the age of nine. Initially pursuing a career as an engineer, he eventually joined his first band, Home, in 1970. Home released two albums, "Home" (1972) and "The Alchemist" (1973), but failed to achieve significant commercial success.

Al Stewart and Formation of Bandit

After leaving Home, Williams joined Al Stewart's band for a short time. In 1974, he formed his own band, Bandit, with Jim Diamond on vocals and Graham Board on drums. Bandit released one album, "Bandit," in 1977.

Joining AC/DC

Bandit disbanded in 1977, leading Williams to consider retiring from music. However, a friend encouraged him to audition for AC/DC, who were looking for a bassist. Williams impressed the band and was recruited to replace Mark Evans.

AC/DC Tenure

Williams's role in AC/DC was to provide a steady, uncomplicated bass foundation for Malcolm Young's rhythm guitar. He contributed to the band's signature sound on albums such as "Powerage" (1978) and "Highway to Hell" (1979). Williams's distinctive basslines, often consisting of just eight notes, became an integral part of AC/DC's energetic performances.

Retirement and Return

Williams left AC/DC in 2016 but returned in 2020. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with AC/DC in 2003.

Personal Life

Williams currently resides in southwest Florida. He has a daughter, Erin Lucas.

Legacy

Cliff Williams's unwavering bass playing has defined the sound and energy of AC/DC. His rhythmic precision and ability to provide a solid foundation for the band's iconic riffs have solidified his place as a true master of his craft.
