Clifton James, an American actor, is best known for his role as Sheriff J.W. Pepper in the famous James Bond films "Live and Let Die" (1973) and "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974). Born George Clifton James in 1921 in New York City, he grew up in a family with a teacher mother, Grace Dean, and a journalist father, Harry James.

Early Life and Military Service
During World War II, James served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945, stationed in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. He received several combat awards, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.

Acting Career
James began his film career in the 1950s, initially playing small roles. He appeared in films such as "The Strange One," "The Last Mile," and "Something Wild," as well as numerous television series like "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," and "Route 66." Despite being born in New York, James often portrayed Southern characters in his films.
In 1962, James landed a role in the gripping drama "David and Lisa," followed by another dramatic film, "Black Like Me," in 1964. His notable performances include the 1967 action film "Cool Hand Luke" and the 1969 dramatic comedy "The Reivers," directed by Mark Rydell.
However, it was his portrayal of Sheriff J.W. Pepper in the James Bond film series that brought him widespread recognition. He first played the character in "Live and Let Die" (1973) and reprised the role in "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974), alongside Roger Moore as James Bond.
