The blister refused to heal, and Leggo experienced flu-like symptoms. A medical examination revealed that his blood sugar levels were severely elevated, indicating Type 1 diabetes. This autoimmune condition attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to energy imbalances and health complications.
Unexpected Symptoms
Leggo retrospectively realized he had exhibited other symptoms of diabetes, including unexplained weight loss and increased thirst. These are often overlooked or attributed to other factors.
Treatment Options and Struggles
Despite aggressive treatment involving insulin injections, antibiotics, and debridement surgery, Leggo's foot infection persisted. Doctors attempted to salvage the limb with specialized dressings and a metal device with 16 bolts. However, the foot continued to deteriorate, and the bone began to separate from the ankle.
A Difficult Decision
After prolonged consultations with his wife, Sue, and careful consideration, Leggo opted for amputation. The surgery involved removing his foot below the right knee and replacing it with a titanium prosthetic.
