Tetrachromacy grants Antico the ability to see a wide array of hues and shades that most people are unable to perceive. For example, when admiring a common daisy, she observes a whole range of additional colors along the edges of the flower. This enhanced perception is made possible by the unique cones in her retina, designed to absorb specific wavelengths of color. While most individuals have only three types of cones tuned to red, green, and blue wavelengths, Antico possesses a fourth cone that allows her to perceive different wavelengths.

The Science of Tetrachromacy

Scientists believe that Antico's tetrachromacy is a result of a mutation in the X chromosome. This mutation is more likely to occur in females, as they have two X chromosomes, increasing the likelihood of the necessary gene combination. Although individuals with tetrachromacy are rare, it is estimated that around two percent of women may carry the genes responsible for distinguishing additional shades.

Testing methods used are limited to working with the three primary pigments: blue, red, and green, making it challenging to detect the nuances of Antico's perception. Nonetheless, based on the analysis of her genes, experts believe that the fourth type of cone in Antico's eyes absorbs waves within the red-orange-yellow spectrum.

A Personal Motivation

While scientists study Antico's phenomenon to gain insights into her unique vision, her motivation stems from a more personal place. Her 12-year-old daughter is colorblind due to her own genetic mutation. Antico hopes that further research into tetrachromacy will increase understanding of the visual information processing, ultimately benefiting individuals with color blindness, including her daughter. She willingly acts as a "guinea pig" in the scientific exploration, believing that the data collected will provide valuable insights in the future.
