Early Life and Career
Born in 1912 to Romanian Jewish immigrants, Bonnie Sawyer grew up in Oakland, California. Her entertainment career began as a stand-up comedian and nightclub performer.
Television Breakthrough
In the late 1940s, Sawyer made her television debut on "The Milton Berle Show," "Colgate Comedy Hour," and "The Jackie Gleason Show." Her breakthrough role came in 1959 when she starred in the musical comedy "A Hole in the Head," alongside Frank Sinatra, Edward G. Robinson, and Eleanor Parker. Sawyer had previously played the role of Mrs. Wexler in the original Broadway play. Sinatra later nominated her for membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Television Icon
Throughout her career, Sawyer remained a prolific television presence, appearing in numerous shows and series, including "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "The Rockford Files," "Hawaii Five-O," "Dynasty," "When Harry Met Sally...," "Murder, She Wrote," "Home Improvement," "Seinfeld," "Boy Meets World," "Will & Grace," "That '70s Show," "8 Simple Rules," "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide," "ER," "How I Met Your Mother," and "The Office."
Academy Member
In 2012, at the age of 99, Sawyer was one of the oldest members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Gerontologist Jacob Appel paid tribute to Sawyer by using her as the inspiration for a minor character in his 2012 novel, "The Man Who Wouldn't Stand Up."
