Pope Conon

Early Life and Career

Pope Conon, originally from Thrace, was born to an army officer. He received his education in Sicily and later became a priest in Rome.

Election and Acclamation

Conon's election in 686 followed a period of conflict between military and ecclesiastical leaders. As a compromise candidate, he was chosen due to his age, respected appearance, and unassuming nature. His enthronement occurred either after notification of his election to the Exarch of Ravenna or after its confirmation.

Relations with the Byzantine Empire

Emperor Justinian II acknowledged Conon's appointment and pledged to adhere to the decisions of the Third Council of Constantinople. He also relieved the papal states of certain taxes and levies.

Missionary Activities

Conon actively supported missionary efforts in Ireland and Franconia. He welcomed Irish missionaries including Kilian and his companions, ordaining Kilian as a bishop and entrusting him with the task of spreading the faith in Franconia.

Death and Legacy

Pope Conon passed away on September 21, 687. He was buried in the narthex of St. Peter's Basilica.
