Reverend Sergei Vinogradov: A Life of Faith and Sacrifice
Early Life and EducationSergei Vinogradov was born in the town of Dmitrov, Russia, into the family of Deacon John Vinogradov. After completing his studies at the Vifanskaya Theological Seminary in 1899, he was appointed as an overseer and teacher at the seminary's exemplary school.
Ecclesiastical Ministry
Father Sergei was ordained a priest and served as rector of various churches in Moscow, including the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky and the Church of St. Nicholas on Pypyshy. In 1918, he was appointed rector of the Church of the Holy Martyrs Florus and Laurus on Zatsepa. In 1920, he was elevated to the rank of archpriest and later became dean of the Zamoskvoretsky deanery in 1924.
Writing and Academic Accomplishments
In addition to his pastoral duties, Father Sergei was also recognized for his scholarly and spiritual writings. He was a graduate of the Moscow Theological Academy and was awarded the Bishop Mikhail of Kursk Academic Prize in 1915.
Persecution and Martyrdom
In 1933, Father Sergei was exiled to the remote town of Kargopol. After his return in 1936, he served at the Ascension Church in the village of Teriaeva Sloboda. In 1937, he was arrested and shot at the Butovo firing range. In 2000, he was canonized as a martyr by the Russian Orthodox Church.
Family Life
Father Sergei was married to Ekaterina Pavlovna Sokolova. They had four children: Galina, Angelina, Irina, and Sergei.
