Biography of Konstantin Falberg
Konstantin Falberg was a German chemist and the inventor of saccharin. In 1879, he was working at Johns Hopkins University for Professor Ira Remsen. Falberg was studying derivatives of bitumen, a type of coal tar, and accidentally spilled a chemical substance on his hand, which formed a crust. Curiously, Falberg decided to taste the unknown substance and found it to be sweet. The sweet substance was later identified as o-sulfobenzoic acid or o-sulfobenzimide, which Falberg named saccharin.
Saccharin Invention and Patents
In 1880, Falberg and Ira Remsen jointly published an article about this new scientific discovery. In 1884, Falberg obtained a patent for his invention and independently organized mass production of saccharin.
